In Anne's words:
After “horsing around” as a child, I was late coming back to horses (mid-30s), but found my sport in endurance very soon. My first distance rides started in the mid-70s, with a progression from competitive trail to endurance. I tried several horses before finding true companionship with Overlook Nuryev or “Beau” who began his endurance career at the very mature age of 15, and since that time has partnered with me for almost 4000 miles, including 50s (his forte) and 100s. We had our share of Top Tens, and in 2000 were awarded the AERC Partner’s Award, a most special moment in our career together. We are still riding together, although at 32 he prefers a slower pace (and so do I!).
Thinking that the USA needed to have more influence in the direction of the FEI, I became an FEI Judge and Chief Steward, and have enjoyed my duties at two Pan Ams, NAEC at Fair Hill, and at WEC/WEGs in France and Spain. I am not so sure that the US has had the influence I would have wished in FEI matters, but I have at least "had my say” in serving on the USEF Endurance Technical Committee and USEF Competitions Committee. I produced a “Guidelines for the OC of FEI Endurance Competitions” and developed and taught a course for Stewards wishing to get into the USEF/FEI officialdom.
It is perhaps most rewarding that I should now be involved in APEX, and helping to develop clinics with the goal of offering ways to enhance rider abilities through training and education, increasing knowledge of the horse and his needs in our very demanding sport, and seeing horse/rider teams improve their performance in National and International events. |
