Glucose to Sodium Solution for Electrolyte Replacement The following is from Hal Schott/ Ken HinchcliffÕs article (p175): The goal is to keep the ratio of glucose to sodium between 1:2 and 2:1. What is a suggested formula for achieving that goal is 30 to 110 mmol/L of sodium to 1% (10 g/L) glucose. To achieve this Add 1/2 cup of Karo syrup or Karo Light and 2 teaspoons of salt to 1 gallon of room temp water * Use Karo or Karo Light (not Karo LITE - different spelling) rather than table sugar because Karo is corn sugar which is mainly glucose rather than other types of sugar. If you use another brand of corn sugar, make sure that it does not contain fructose (as many of o the other brands will) * Use sodium chloride rather than sodium bicarbonate because it provides chloride which the endurance horse needs. Also Ð youÕd have to add more sodium bicarb to get the same amount of sodium, so this formula does not work if you substitute sodium bicarb for sodium chloride
